Guidance to help you assess your current (or planned) RF products and architecture.

This guidance advises on the safe use of radio frequency (RF) communications within operational technology (OT) environments, and helps operators and engineers to uplift their security within the area of RF communications. This guidance can also be used by:

  • RF product vendors investigating the requirements needed to provide a sufficiently secure product
  • test labs when performing a security assessment of an RF product

Introduction

This guidance provides security advice on the use of radio frequency (RF) communications within operational technology (OT) environments. The principles within this document will help you to assess your current (or planned) RF products and/or architecture. It identifies areas in which operators can focus their security efforts, including aspects that may be overlooked.

Applying these principles should aid in ensuring that appropriately secure RF architectures are developed. As principle-based guidance, this document does not provide low-level implementation guidance or specific configuration information.

Note:

Cellular network communications are out of scope for this guidance, but some elements may also be relevant to cellular deployments.
