Digital contact tracing in the NHS COVID-19 app
The NCSC’s radio frequency researchers, who typically work on military systems and communications, were deployed to help engineer the Bluetooth capabilities required by the NHS contract tracing Covid-19 app. Using Bluetooth to measure distance in the real world had never been done at this scale before. The NHS Covid-19 app has been downloaded 26.8m times in England and Wales, and became an important and trusted tool in the UK’s response to the pandemic.
